Q36.5 Adventure Winter Jacket

Q36.5 was founded in 2013 with a very clear vision to develop some of the world most efficent cycling clothing, that assists all riders in maintaining the optimal body temprature of 36.5 at all times. The company hails from the Dolomites mountain range in Italy and produces some of the very best and unique products on the market.

The Q in the compamy names stands for the Latin word Quaerere that stands for Research and the team at Q Lab takes great pride in the Research and development side of their business, as Lugi Bergamo the CEO and Head of R&D has stated “Q36.5 was born as a research laboratory – allowing for unrestrained experimentation and innovation in the cycling industry. Each piece of Q36.5 clothing is an uncompromising piece of technical equipment that allows riders to make marginal gains whilst keeping their body temperature at the optimal 36.5°C.”

The Q36.5 Adventure Winter Jacket Navy is the first product I have reviewed for Q36.5 and I have been very impressed. In Ireland we often say we can have the four season’s in one day and this winter in particular has been pretty harsh with strongs winds, rain and biting cold becoming a regular occurance on all our rides to date. The jacket was paired with the Base Layer 3 Long Sleeve Anthracite and they really complement each other. The team at Q36.5 say that the Q36.5 Adventure Winter Jacket is the “winter jacket for every weather condition” and I believe it certainly is.

This is not your typical winter cycling jacket. The first thing I noticed when I unpacked it was the inner layer of the jacket that comes in a knitted jacquard brushed fabric. It provides an amazing level of thermal insulation and on all my winter rides, I really like this, for me its like having a cosy blanket wrapped around you but because of the high level of technology that goes into this product you never feel like you are overheating. The Q36.5 Adventure Winter Jacket creates a layer of warm air that wraps around you next to your skin that has amazing way of absorbing the moisture you generate on your cycle and wicking it away keeping your body temprature as it should be allowing you not over heat or get cold due to excessive sweating. When you combine the excellent properties of the inner layer of the jacket to the the external shell with its three layer waterproof fabric and the UF 75Shell (75g/m2 and 15 denier) with a durable water repellent treatment you know you are well covered no matter the weather.

The Q36.5 Adventure Winter Jacket comes with a Hermetic Collar system, this is basically a second collar inside the first one. This second collar is very soft made up of a fleece design that sits on your neck. This provides you with a seal that keeps the cold air from getting in keeping you nice on warm even on the clodest of winter days.

As we have discussed Q36.5 like setting high standards and spend a lot of time developing and researching all there products and the components relating to them, the level of detail they put into their products is of a really high standard. These inovations are very obvious when you look at the Regional Sweat Rate body mapping allowng the creation of mapping breathability of different degrees throughout the product based off the reseach they have carried out on the various sweat rates throughout athlete’s body’s allowing for the correct distribution of breathable panels, this allows Q36.5 to provide insulation where it matters yet keeping the weight off the product to a minimum for a medium jacket 285g.

The Q36.5 Adventure Winter Jacket comes in a variety of really nice colours including Australian Green, Black, Navy and Olive Green. I got the Navy and it looks great. When looking at sizing normally I would be XXl but I went for XL and found this size to be the perfect fit. It has three really nice pockets at the back of the jacket with plenty room for food, bicycle pump and mobile phone. The zipper cord is long and easy to open with cycling gloves on and has some reflective panels to keep you nice and safe on the darker evenings.

As I have already stated I have tested this out paired Base Layer 3 Long Sleeve Anthracite on the coldest of Irish days, I have cycled in the pounding rain and strong winds and throughout all of this the Q36.5 Adventure Winter Jacket has kept me warm and dry. Winter roads in Ireland can get very mucky this time of year and having come home on many ocassions covered from head to toe in muck I can guarantee it washes really well when following the washing intructions correctly.
